Headstone cleaning and monuments in Flushing

Flushing is twenty-five minutes west of the shop and sits on our weekly Genesee County route. Flushing City Cemetery straddles Coutant Street, with the older ground and the village's earliest stones on one side and the newer sections opposite. The city's cemetery ordinance is one of the strictest in the county about what may sit on a grave — markers, flowers, urns, and veteran flags, and essentially nothing else — which leaves the condition of the stone itself as the one thing a family can still change. Cleaning is $80 per stone, non-taxable.

What Flushing requires, and how we meet it

Markers, flowers, urns, and veteran flags — nothing else

The ordinance permits only markers, memorials, flowers, and urns as expressly allowed, plus veteran flags authorised by law. Ornaments, signs, trellises, shepherd's hooks, statues, benches, landscaping, bricks, stones, and grave border materials may not be installed. Veteran flags and holders follow Veterans Administration rules.

Flowers stay within eighteen inches

Natural flowers may go in beds not exceeding eighteen inches behind the marker, and silk flowers must sit in a pot or container within the same eighteen inches. No rose bushes of any kind may be planted. Anything outside those limits, or planted without approval, is removed by the city.

Nothing may obstruct a mower

Mounds, bricks, blocks, and any borders that hinder the free use of a lawn mower are prohibited, and surfaces other than earth or sod are not allowed. Grading, levelling, or excavating, and any planting of trees or shrubs, require the City Superintendent's prior permission — in writing, for plantings.

Foundations are ordered from the city

Flushing installs foundations itself at $0.65 per square inch, with removal charged at $100, under the fee schedule the City Council adopted effective July 1, 2017. We include the city's foundation charge in a monument quote so the number you approve is the number you pay.

Rules as published by the City of Flushing cemetery rules and fee schedule (see the current text). Cemetery requirements do change, so we confirm them with the office before we cut a base or set a stone.

Stones that have leaned, sunk, or come off their base

Monument and headstone resetting and levelling is quoted rather than priced from a list, because the work depends on the size of the stone, the base beneath it, and the ground it has settled into. Send photographs and the cemetery name and we will tell you what it involves.
