Headstone cleaning and monuments in Grand Blanc

Grand Blanc is ten minutes from the shop and sits on our weekly Genesee County route, so you pick the date and we confirm it. The township owns three cemeteries here — Maple Gibson on East Hill Road, Perry McFarlen at Perry and Genesee, and Oakwood off Leach Lane — and its cemetery ordinance is unusually blunt about where the township's job stops: perpetual care is mowing, reseeding, and levelling sunken graves, and it excludes repairing or maintaining the marker itself. That part is the family's, and it is the part we do, for $80 per stone, non-taxable.

What Grand Blanc requires, and how we meet it

Perpetual care stops before your marker

Section 15 of the township ordinance defines perpetual care as mowing, reseeding, and levelling all sunken graves at reasonable intervals, and states that anything beyond those essential features is not included — naming the repair, maintenance, or replacement of any marker, memorial, monument, or urn. Cleaning the stone was never the township's job.

Quality granite or standard bronze only

The ordinance permits quality granite and standard bronze, and marble only where the quality and finish are durable. Other grades of marble, sandstone, slate, artificial stone, fieldstone, terra cotta, wood, iron, and glass are excluded in any form. Appendages such as books, photos, or glasswork are prohibited unless cast in bronze and used as a plate in the die.

Foundations are capped at 42 by 20 inches

A single space allows a foundation no more than 42 inches long, no wider than the burial space, and 20 inches deep. Multiple spaces allow up to 60 by 20 inches. The Township Clerk must approve any variation. Foundation installation is billed at $0.60 per square inch with a $150 minimum, which covers both the foundation and setting it. We size the base to those numbers before we cut.

One marker per space, west side, facing east or west

Only one marker, monument, or memorial is permitted per burial space, placed on the west side, and all monuments must face east or west. A marker may instead be centred over two spaces.

Decoration windows are enforced

Artificial flowers, grave blankets, and wreaths are permitted at ground level only from November 1 to April 1; from April 2 to October 31 they are allowed only in urns or affixed to the marker. Flower beds and cut-flower vases must sit directly in front of the marker and extend no more than eight inches from its base. We clean and edge the stone and leave everything else where the ordinance put it.

Rules as published by the Grand Blanc Charter Township Cemetery Ordinance No. 07-11 (see the current text). Cemetery requirements do change, so we confirm them with the office before we cut a base or set a stone.

Stones that have leaned, sunk, or come off their base

Questions from families in Grand Blanc

Does Grand Blanc Township clean the headstone for me?

No. The township's cemetery ordinance defines perpetual care as mowing, reseeding, and levelling sunken graves, and expressly excludes the repair, maintenance, or replacement of any marker, memorial, monument, or urn. Cleaning the stone at Maple Gibson, Perry McFarlen, or Oakwood is the family's responsibility, and we do it for $80 per stone.

What foundation size does Grand Blanc Township allow?

A single burial space allows a foundation up to 42 inches long, no wider than the space itself, and 20 inches deep; multiple spaces allow up to 60 inches by 20 inches. Variations need the Township Clerk's approval. The township charges $0.60 per square inch for foundation installation with a $150 minimum, and we build the base to those dimensions so nothing has to be remade on site.

Which cemeteries does Grand Blanc Township own?

Three: Maple Gibson Cemetery at 3322 E. Hill Road, Perry McFarlen Cemetery at Perry Road and Genesee Road, and Oakwood Cemetery on Leach Lane just east of McCandlish Road and Saginaw Street. Lots are handled by the township's Public Services Department, and openings and closings are arranged directly with Genesee Valley Vault Inc. at 810-695-5166. We clean at all three, and at the private cemeteries in the area as well.

Can I put a marble or fieldstone marker in a Grand Blanc township cemetery?

Only durable marble qualifies. The ordinance permits quality granite and standard bronze, allows marble where the quality and finish are durable, and excludes other grades of marble along with sandstone, slate, artificial stone, fieldstone, terra cotta, wood, iron, and glass. Every monument we cut for Grand Blanc is granite or bronze, so it clears that rule as ordered.

Do you clean headstones in Grand Blanc?

Yes. Headstone and monument cleaning is $80 per stone in Grand Blanc. Grand Blanc sits on our weekly cleaning route out of Davison, Michigan. Pick the date that works for your family and we confirm it directly.

Professional biological cleaning with safe soft-brush methods, light trimming and edging around the base where appropriate, before and after photographs sent to you, and participation in the One-for-One Veteran Memorial Program. No bleach, no acids, no pressure washing, and no wire brushes.

Is the $80 a deposit or the full price?

It is the full price of one completed cleaning, paid once. Each additional stone is the same $80. Choose the number of headstones on the booking form; it shows the total, and checkout charges exactly that.

How do I choose the number of headstones?
