Headstone cleaning and monuments in Lake Orion
Lake Orion sits on our northern Oakland route, so we confirm your date once that run is set — $80 per stone, nothing charged at booking. The Village owns, operates, and maintains both cemeteries here: East Lawn on Orion Road, still selling lots, and Evergreen downtown at West Church and North Axford just west of M-24, which is closed to new burials and so holds Lake Orion's oldest stones. Those older markers are exactly the ones where a century of weathering has closed the lettering up.

What Lake Orion requires, and how we meet it
Flowers run May 1 to November 1
Flowers may be placed at both Evergreen and East Lawn from May 1 to November 1 and on national holidays. Grave blankets and wreaths are permitted in all sections through the winter, roughly November 1 to April 1 depending on the weather, and the Village may remove and dispose of them when it judges the time right.
Vases must be planted by June 25
Vases and urns that are not properly painted or otherwise cared for, and that have not been filled with plants by June 25 of any year, are removed from the sections. Glass jars, metal cans, and earthen vessels or dishes are not permitted as bouquet holders at all, because they break and scatter across the lawn.
Nothing may protrude more than twelve inches in front of a marker
Settees, benches, fences, ornaments, toys, artificial flowers, and similar items must be removed when they become damaged, obsolete, or non-functional, when the lot is not properly maintained, or when they protrude more than twelve inches in front of any marker or headstone. Gravel and stones are not allowed as landscape base material, and no coping, fencing, or other means of marking a lot or grave boundary may be used.
Benches are capped at 48 inches and must be pre-approved
Benches must be cement or stone and no larger than forty-eight inches, and the placement of any bench or tree has to be approved in advance by the Village cemetery sexton. Breaking the sod on a lot to plant trees or shrubs likewise requires the sexton's authorisation, granted only where the landscaping suits the cemetery and the lots involved.
The Village may repair or remove a failing stone
If a monument or marker becomes so ruinous that it disfigures the rest of the cemetery, the Village has the power to have it repaired, and if it is not repaired, to have it removed. Cleaning a stone before it reaches that point is considerably cheaper than the alternative, and it is not something the Village does for you. Burial of cremated remains on an existing family grave is allowed at both cemeteries, by Village personnel only.
Rules as published by the Village of Lake Orion Public Works cemetery pages (see the current text). Cemetery requirements do change, so we confirm them with the office before we cut a base or set a stone.
How cleaning works in Lake Orion
Lake Orion is a primary monument market, and northern Oakland cemeteries are cleaned on selected routes. We group your stone with other work nearby and confirm the date after you book, usually within one to three weeks. Usually 1 to 3 weeks.
- Professional biological cleaning using safe soft-brush methods — no bleach, no acids, no pressure washing, no wire brushes.
- Light trimming and edging around the base where appropriate.
- Before and after photographs sent to you when the stone is finished.
- Every paid cleaning honours a veteran through the One-for-One Veteran Memorial Program.
- The number of headstones is chosen on the booking form, and that quantity is what we clean.
Stones that have leaned, sunk, or come off their base
Monument and headstone resetting and levelling is quoted rather than priced from a list, because the work depends on the size of the stone, the base beneath it, and the ground it has settled into. Send photographs and the cemetery name and we will tell you what it involves.
